CLEVER MONKEY
OF THE MONTH
Alexander Litvinenko
For refusing to go quietly into that polonium night
Whoever poisoned Alexander V. Litvinenko must be regurgitating his sushi from nervousness, because of the attention Litvinenko’s refusal to go quietly into that polonium night has evoked around the world. Not to mention the dogged British investigators relentlessly seeking to identify the assassin.
Who can forget the photographs of Litvinenko as a handsome young man and then as a terminally poisoned victim, lying in his hospital greens?
Yet, even doomed, he was defiant. He made sure he was photographed in the condition he had been reduced to, and he accused President Putin of complicity in his poisoning.
Whatever the outcome, the perpetrators have not found the peace they hoped to find in silencing him. And such malefactors may actually think twice before repeating such an ill-advised tactic.
So here’s to Alexander Litvinenko, our clever monkey of the month, even in extremis.
