LAW AND DISORDER

The American Bar Association announced it has recommended that its members adopt a method of billing clients that will allow the supplicants to have an ongoing idea of the legal costs they’re incurring.

The bar feels that the unpredictability of billing by hours when clients have no way of keeping track of them, except when they see the actual bill, is a key reason that there continue to be a regrettable overabundance of jokes about lawyers.

Immediately following the announcement, over 10,000 lawyer-members filed an injunction to stop the measure from proceeding.

They also threatened that, if their grievance is not redressed by the association, they will stop giving clients what they are referring to as “a 16-hour daily grace period” and will commence billing on a timescale based, not on the usual eight-hour day, but on the recent and particularly troublesome cliché, 24/7.
