World Cup Thrills Most Nations; Americans Still Think Of A Cup Of Coffee

The World Cup soccer competition proceeded with ecstatic displays by victors and unrestrained shenanigans by fans from virtually every country that can afford to sponsor a soccer team, while most Americans, upon hearing the phrase World Cup, are still inclined to think of a cup of coffee.

Though America fielded another team while soccer, we hear, continues to become more popular in the country, a mini-survey revealed that, while players from, say Brazil, are known by terms of endearment like Rinaldo, not one of the Americans surveyed knew the identity of a single member of the American team.

Meanwhile, on the home front, the Yanks, the Mets, the Dodgers and the usual assortment of professional baseball teams continued to attract the attention of the vast majority of sports-minded Americans, while Tiger Woods failure to qualify for the U. S. Open evoked sympathy because of our knowledge of his personal life, and many fans were disheartened to hear that the young quarterback of the Pittsburg Steelers was injured, though not cripplingly, in a helmet-free motorcycle accident.

It seems that in America, at least at this time, soccer still doesn’t command the locker.
