WHAT THE TECH
Steve Jobs, in an announcement that made the Apple faithful irate, said, “We’ve decided we’re going to make Macs that run on Windows."
From the reaction, one would have thought he said he was going to discontinue making Macs.
“I’ve been using Macs since day one,” an incensed user said. “I stuck with them, even when their share of market went through the floor and my school dumped them. I accepted slower laptops because they couldn’t get faster processors. I even paid higher prices for everything, just to stay loyal. Then look what happens! I feel betrayed.”
Mr. Jobs tried to assuage his user base, saying, “Look, we make great computers, but only five percent of the world can buy them. We want to make great computers for the other 95% of the world, too.”
Unconvinced, Apple aficionados continued to grumble.
One user said, “I don’t like Windows because I don’t like the way Bill Gates cuts his hair. I never will, and now every time I look at my Apple, I’ll think of him and his lousy haircut.”
The news did have an effect on Wall Street, where Apple stock surged on the news.
One analyst stated, “The surprising thing is that it’s taken them this long to realize there’s a market for Apple computers outside of the Apple operating system. I mean, iPods run on Windows without exploding. Why shouldn’t Macs?”
